چکیده

W hich urban pest is the most difficult to control? Most PMPs say ants. But the answer to this question has shifted completely over the past 20 years — from cockroaches to ants. Today, few people consider the German cockroach a difficult pest to manage. What made the change is the invention of highly effective baits, in particular, gel baits. Then, the question is, why is the German cockroach still common in urban areas? The German cockroach’s small size, short life cycle, high reproductive potential and resistance development are well-known factors accounting for their success. However, a frequently ignored factor is poor pest control practices. Despite the plethora of effective tools and methods available, it is not uncommon to find people, including professionals, relying on ineffective materials or methods to treat cockroach infestations. Studies have shown that an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach incorporating bait and other non-chemical By Changlu Wang, Narinderpal Singh, Richard Cooper and Clay Scherer

Bear-Baiting May Exacerbate Wolf-Hunting Dog Conflict

BACKGROUND The influence of policy on the incidence of human-wildlife conflict can be complex and not entirely anticipated. Policies for managing bear hunter success and depredation on hunting dogs by wolves represent an important case because with increasing wolves, depredations are expected to increase. This case is challenging because compensation for wolf depredation on hunting dogs as comp...

The Difficulty of Reducing Introduced Wasp (vespula Vulgaris) Populations for Conservation Gains

New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1998) 22(1): 55-63 ©New Zealand Ecological Society offer any hope of reducing numbers to any great extent in the near future (Barlow, Moller and Beggs, 1996; Beggs, Harris and Read, 1996). Poison-baiting is currently the only viable technique for reducing wasp density, as finding and destroying nests is very labour intensive. Trials using poison-baiting have been...

Variation in Baiting Intensity Among CO2-Baited Traps Used to Collect Hematophagous Arthropods

Hematophagous arthropods transmit the etiological agents of numerous diseases and as a result are frequently the targets of sampling to characterize vector and pathogen populations. Arguably, the most commonly used sampling approach involves traps baited with carbon dioxide. We report results of a laboratory study in which the performance of carbon dioxide-baited traps was evaluated using measu...

Development of Rodent Control Technology for Confined Swine Facilities

This paper discusses the development of site-specific baiting technology for controlling the house mouse (Mus musculus) in confined swine facilities utilizing specific rodenticide formulations, bait stations, and baiting strategies. Behavioral research was also conducted to identify primary nesting and travel activities of mice within grower-finishing units. The rodenticide bromadiolone in a bl...

A comparison of four rodent control methods in Philippine experimental rice fields

Four rodent control techniques-sustained baiting (SB) with cournachlor. pulsed baiting (PB) with brodifacoum. a lethal electrified barrier (LEB), and a nonlethal electrified barrier (NLEB)-were evaluated on the experimental fann of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. A fifth treatment (no experimental rodent control) was established for reference. Mean tiller da...

Control of Foraging Colonies of Subterranean Termites, Coptotermes travians (lsoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in Malaysia Using Hexaflumuron Baits

Coptotermes travians (Haviland) is one of the most important subterranean termite pest species attacking urban buildings and structures in Malaysia. Two colonies of C. travians infesting residential premises (Colony A & B), and another one in a natural habitat (Colony C) were characterized. Foraging territories ranged between 125 384 m2, with maximum foraging distances of 17 32 m per colony. At...
